Paving Big Spring from the base up

Highway 19 carries most of what happens around Big Spring, running about eight miles south of I-70 toward Hermann. Driveways, parking lots and farm yards make up the paving here, and the Loutre River valley ground under them is uneven: some flats hold water, some slopes send it moving in a hurry.

A large spring near the original town site gave the community its name, and its post office ran from 1830 to 1906. We build for what the ground does. Soft material comes out, clean rock is compacted in layers, hot-mix asphalt is placed and rolled dense, and the surface is graded so water leaves before it can work into the base. Driveway paving in Big Spring

Valley and hillside drives here run long, and they carry pickups, trailers and delivery trucks. We set grade first so water crosses the drive rather than running its length, then build base to match the load. Typical home drives get 2 to 3 inches of compacted hot-mix over compacted rock, thicker at turnarounds. A long lane can be paved in phases across seasons.

Parking lot paving in Big Spring

Out here a lot is a church, a shop, a small business or a farm equipment pad. Those get a base built for the heaviest vehicle that sits on them, a grade that drains away from buildings, and tight edges. Asphalt still in sound shape often needs only crack repair and seal coating.

Road construction & private roads

Farm lanes, field roads and shared private drives run off Highway 19 and the county roads around it. We build them on compacted rock with a crown that sheds, culverts where runoff crosses, and asphalt or chip seal depending on the traffic. Entrances get extra base where loaded trucks turn.

General asphalt paving & repair

A lot of rural pavement near Big Spring fails at the edges, where water gets under the asphalt and tires break the shoulder down. Overlays, edge rebuilds and better drainage are often the fix. When the base is gone, we rebuild it before we pave.

Built for Big Spring's ground

The Loutre River hills drop off the claypan upland that covers much of Montgomery County. Claypan drains slowly and carries a perched water table in winter and spring, while hill ground moves water fast and cuts shoulders. Both fail pavement without drainage work. We ditch, grade and compact before placing asphalt.

Bids are only comparable when they spell out the same things: base depth, compacted thickness, how edges are finished, and where water is meant to go. Ask for those before you pick a number.

Compacted asphaltTypically 2 to 3 in. for a car drive
Stone baseTypically 4 to 8 in., compacted
Drive on itUsually 2 to 3 days, longer in heat

Big Spring paving questions

Straight answers for Big Spring homeowners and property managers. Anything else, call (866) 490-7680.

How far south of I-70 do you come?

As far as the work is. Big Spring sits about eight miles down Highway 19 from the interstate, and we pave through that corridor toward Hermann and New Florence, along with the rest of the area. Estimates are free and come with 25% off.

Should a long lane be gravel or asphalt?

Gravel costs less up front and needs regrading. Asphalt costs more and stops the washboarding and dust, if the base under it is built right. Many long lanes get paved in sections over time, starting near the house and the turns where the mess is worst.

Can you pave over my old asphalt?

Sometimes. If the base under your Big Spring pavement is still solid and the surface only has shallow cracking, an overlay can work well. If the pavement is sinking, rutting or breaking into alligator cracks, the base has failed and it needs to be rebuilt first. The free estimate is where we sort that out.

Is chip seal or asphalt millings a better fit for a long drive?

Both cost less than hot mix and both work well on long drives around Big Spring. Chip seal gives a tough, textured surface; compacted millings bind tighter than gravel and cut the dust. We will walk the lane and tell you honestly where each one makes sense.
