Ground and drainage

The city sits on bluffs and terraces roughly 100 to 200 feet above the west bank of the Mississippi, with elevations from about 413 to 616 feet. Everything drains to the river, directly or through streams like the River des Peres. Add karst ground on the south side and clay soils that work with every freeze and thaw, and base and drainage do most of the job.
