Ste. Genevieve County runs from the Mississippi bottoms up into wooded Ozark hills. The county seat is one of the oldest French colonial settlements west of the Mississippi. After the great flood of 1785 the town moved off the floodplain to its present site about two miles north, and Ste. Genevieve National Historical Park joined the national park system in 2020. A karst plain about five miles wide runs down the river side of the county, marked by sinkholes and sinkhole ponds. The soil survey notes some of it is not suited to building because of those sinkholes. Out in the Mississippi bottoms, soils are loamy to clayey alluvium that holds water.
