Paving across Madison County
Madison County is old mining ground. It is recorded as having the oldest lead mine west of the Mississippi River, with French miners working Mine La Motte, four miles north of Fredericktown, in the early 1700s. Fredericktown is the county seat. About 60 percent of residents lived in rural areas at the 2020 census, so long drives, shared lanes and farm access roads are common. Highway 67 runs north and south through the county.
Parts of the county sit in the St. Francois Mountains, where Precambrian igneous rock is exposed at the surface. Black Mountain climbs from about 540 feet at the St. Francis River to 1,502 feet at its summit. On grades like that we crown the drive, compact rock in layers and support the edges before the hot mix goes down. Call (866) 490-7680 for a free estimate and 25% off.
Ground and drainage
Igneous rock is exposed across parts of the county, and Silver Mines on the St. Francis River is known for its Precambrian granite and felsite. Rock near the surface gives a firm foundation, but it also means thin soil, steep grades and runoff with nowhere to soak in. We grade for that, compact a rock base, and slope the surface to shed water.

Madison County paving questions
Do you pave gravel roads out in the county?
Yes. Private roads, shared drives and farm access roads are a main service. We regrade and crown the road, compact rock in layers, then pave with asphalt sized for the traffic. On long runs, recycled asphalt is worth pricing against hot mix.
How long does a new asphalt driveway last?
It depends far more on the base and drainage than on the asphalt. A driveway built on compacted rock that sheds water lasts many years with routine crack filling and, later, seal coating. One laid thin over soft, wet ground can fail in a couple of winters.
