Paving across Washington County

Washington County is farm country crossed by I-64, with Nashville as the county seat and largest city. We pave driveways, parking lots, farm lanes and private roads from Okawville at exit 41 east to Irvington and south to Oakdale. Route 127 and Route 15 both run through Nashville, and the lots along them carry steady traffic.

The Kaskaskia River forms the northern county line. Mud, Elkhorn, Plum and Crooked creeks drain toward it, while the Little Muddy River and Beaucoup Creek run south out of the county. The upland between them is claypan, ground that sheds water slowly. Several of the slow-draining southern Illinois soil series were first described right here in this county. Ground and drainage

Claypan is a dense subsoil that water barely moves through. It is hard when dry, sticky when wet, and it lies under most of this county's upland. Pavement over saturated base is what lifts and cracks after a freeze. We proof the subgrade, remove soft spots, compact rock in lifts and set the grade so water leaves quickly.

Washington County paving questions

Why does claypan ground matter for my driveway?

Because water cannot drain down through it, so it collects under the pavement instead. The answer is a subgrade that has been proofed and corrected, a compacted aggregate base that carries the load, and a surface graded so runoff leaves rather than ponding at an edge.

Do you pave in the smaller Washington County villages?

Yes. Nashville, Okawville, Ashley, Irvington, Hoyleton, Addieville, Du Bois, New Minden, Oakdale, Radom, Richview and Venedy are all in our area, along with greater St. Louis on both sides of the river. Estimates are free and you get 25% off.
