Paving across St. Louis County

St. Louis County wraps around the City of St. Louis and holds most of the region's people. Locals split it up: North County above I-70, West County past I-270, South County below I-44. Clayton is the county seat. The ground changes as you move across it. Upland soils formed in loess, the south and southwest run to cherty residuum over limestone, and elevations climb from about 380 feet where the Meramec meets the Mississippi to about 900 feet at the Rockwoods Range in Wildwood.

We pave home driveways, subdivision streets, business lots and church lots in hot-mix asphalt over a compacted rock base. The county soil survey is blunt about local roads on many upland soils here: they need adequate base material plus side ditches and culverts, because low strength and frost action tear up anything laid thin. We build that way. Call (866) 490-7680 for a free estimate and 25% off.

Ground and drainage

Most of the county is rolling loess upland, with Missouri River bluffs near Chesterfield, river bottoms, and Ozark foothills in the southwest. Near the rivers the ground is karst, with caves, sinkholes and springs. Clay subsoils swell when wet and shrink when dry, and frost works the base every winter. Drainage and a compacted rock base come first.

St. Louis County paving questions

What does frost action do to a driveway?

Water in the base freezes, lifts the pavement, then thaws and leaves a void behind. The surface settles into it and cracks. The county soil survey lists frost action as a limitation on many upland soils here, which is why we compact a rock base and drain it.

Do you pave subdivision streets and private roads?

Yes. Road construction is one of our main services, including subdivision streets, shared drives and access roads. We grade and crown the road, compact rock in layers, then pave with asphalt sized for the traffic it carries. Estimates are free and you get 25% off.
