We survey where water runs, regrade, remove soft material, compact rock in layers, and place hot-mix asphalt, typically 2 to 3 inches compacted for cars and light trucks. Turnarounds, courtyards and side pads get the same base, since vehicles sit and turn there.

Typically a compacted crushed-stone base several inches deep on firm soil, with soft spots dug out first, and that holds for any Town and Country driveway. On clay soils that hold water, a thicker base and good slope matter even more. The estimate states the base depth so there are no surprises.
