Ground and drainage
Upland soils here formed in windblown loess, running from about 6 feet thick in the east to more than 25 feet near the western bluffs, over limestone, dolomite and shale. Deep loess cuts fast when water runs across it. Down on the Mississippi floodplain, river-bottom soils stay soft and wet. Either one wants drainage planned before the base goes in.

Yes. Bluff ground means grade, and grade means runoff. We shape sloped drives so water crosses off the surface, cut drainage where it collects, and support the edges so the outside does not break away. Elevations here run from about 420 feet on the floodplain to about 890 feet.
Can asphalt go over an old concrete drive?
Sometimes. If the concrete is sound and well drained, asphalt can go over a prepared surface. But joints and broken slabs usually reflect cracks up through the new pavement. In most cases we remove the old surface, fix the base and pave fresh.
