Blacktop that holds up in Fidelity

Several hundred Valentine's Day cards come through the Fidelity post office each year just for the postmark. The village itself is small homes and country road frontage, and that is where the paving work sits: driveways first, then parking lots and the shop pads and lanes behind them. A drive that ruts every spring or sheds gravel into the ditch is usually telling you the base underneath is thin.

We build up from the ground. Soft spots dug out, aggregate base compacted in layers, grade set so water leaves the surface, then hot-mix asphalt rolled dense. The upland here is deep windblown silt over rock, which holds water longer than sand does. Free estimate, 25% off, and a plain number to call: (866) 490-7680.

Driveway paving in Fidelity

Most drives around the village run from a county road up to the house, longer than a city driveway and often used by a pickup and a trailer as well as cars. We shape the approach so runoff leaves at the edges instead of running the length of the drive. Base rock gets compacted first, then hot mix, typically 2 to 3 inches compacted for cars and light trucks, with more where heavier loads turn.

Parking lot paving in Fidelity

Small lots here belong to a church, a hall or a shop building, and most of them take more weight than a house drive. We set the entrance where a truck can swing in without dropping a wheel off the edge, build the base to match, and pitch the surface to a low side so puddles do not sit through a freeze.

Road construction & private roads

Private lanes, shared drives and field roads are regular work. A crown on the surface and a firm shoulder keep the wheel paths from softening. On a long farm lane, chip seal covers ground at lower cost where traffic is light, and full asphalt makes sense where grain trucks run through it.

General asphalt paving & repair

Out around Fidelity, general asphalt work often means shop pads, machine-shed aprons, turnarounds for trucks and trailers, and the stretch of lane where gravel keeps washing out. We build those with drainage and heavy tires in mind.

Why the base matters in Fidelity

The upland north of the river bluffs is deep windblown silt over rock, and silt holds water. Water sitting under an edge freezes, lifts the asphalt and cracks it open by spring. We grade for runoff first, pull out soft material, and compact the rock base in layers so the frost has less to work with.

The part of the job you can see is the last two inches. Ask what is underneath, how it will be compacted, and which way the finished surface drains.

Compacted asphaltTypically 2 to 3 in. for a car drive
Stone baseTypically 4 to 8 in., compacted
Drive on itUsually 2 to 3 days, longer in heat
First sealcoatTypically 6 to 12 months after paving

Typical ranges. Your Fidelity estimate is sized to the soil, the traffic and the drainage on your property.

Fidelity paving questions

Straight answers for Fidelity homeowners and property managers. Anything else, call (866) 490-7680.

How long before I can park on a new driveway?

Plan on a day or two before car traffic, longer in hot weather, and keep heavy trucks off for a few weeks while it hardens. Avoid sharp turns with the wheels stopped, since fresh asphalt scuffs easily in its first season.

Do you work in Medora and Shipman too?

Yes. We cover Fidelity and the nearby Jersey and Macoupin county villages, including Medora, Shipman, Brighton and Jerseyville, along with greater St. Louis on both sides of the river. Estimates are free and you get 25% off.

Should I sealcoat my new driveway right away?

No. Fresh asphalt in Fidelity needs time to cure before it is sealed, typically several months and often up to a year. Sealing too early can trap oils in the pavement. After that, sealing every few years helps it resist water, sun and salt.

Is gravel over the mud enough to build on?

Not usually. If the subgrade under a Fidelity lane is soft, stone alone just sinks into it. The fix is digging out the soft spots and rebuilding in compacted layers so the base has something to sit on.
