A subdivision drive from the 1950s or 1960s is usually a thin mat of asphalt over very little rock, and it fails at the apron, along the edges and wherever water pools by the garage. We dig out what has failed, compact rock in layers and place hot mix, typically 2 to 3 inches compacted for cars and pickups. A wider pad for a second vehicle gets the same base work underneath.
