Glass gave this city its name. Pittsburgh Plate Glass opened a plant here in the 1880s, and the town, first called New Detroit, became Crystal City. With neighboring Festus it makes up what people around here call the Twin Cities, and the two run together along one main road.
US 61/67 crosses both as Truman Boulevard, and I-55 exit 174 feeds the business loop, so commercial pavement follows those routes. Drives here sit on two kinds of ground: flat bottom land near the river, and sloped ground above it. A flat drive needs pitch built into it because there is little natural fall, while a sloped drive needs runoff pushed to the side before it cuts a channel. Either way we rebuild the base, compact rock in layers and pave, typically 2 to 3 inches of compacted hot mix.

Parking lot pavingAccess roads to commercial and industrial property carry loaded trucks, and no amount of asphalt thickness makes up for a thin base under that weight. We grade, crown and compact in lifts, then pave to the load. Private roads on the slopes get shoulder support and a ditch that actually moves water.
