Why the base matters in Defiance
River valley ground and bluff ground behave differently. Bottomland stays wetter and settles, while hillsides shed water fast and cut channels. Clay-heavy soils are common across the St. Louis region, and they hold water that freezes and lifts pavement in winter. We remove soft material, compact rock in layers and grade so water never stands.
The part of the job you can see is the last two inches. Ask what is underneath, how it will be compacted, and which way the finished surface drains.
Compacted asphaltTypically 2 to 3 in. for a car drive
Stone baseTypically 4 to 8 in., compacted
Drive on itUsually 2 to 3 days, longer in heat
First sealcoatTypically 6 to 12 months after paving
Typical ranges. Your Defiance estimate is sized to the soil, the traffic and the drainage on your property.
