Blacktop that holds up in Frankclay

Five miles west of what is now Park Hills, this small community had its own post office from 1905 to 1973 and takes its name from the original owner of the town site. Driveways and parking lots are most of the work here: home drives off the county roads, church and shop lots, and the pads that go with a barn or a working yard.

Out this way, nearly everything is private property from the road to the building, so drainage falls to the owner to get right. That is where we start. Soft ground comes out, rock base is compacted in layers, the grade is set to move water, and hot mix is rolled to a dense finish. Estimates are free, and you get 25% off.

Driveway paving in Frankclay

A drive out here usually runs a good distance in from the road and carries a work truck or a trailer along with the cars. We build the base for the heaviest thing on it, pull out soft spots first, then place hot mix, typically 2 to 3 inches compacted for light traffic, with more depth at the entrance and wherever vehicles turn around.

Parking lot paving in Frankclay

Church lots, shop yards and small business pads around this part of the county take a loaded truck on top of daily cars. We size the base for the truck, put the entrance where a trailer can swing in, and grade so water leaves rather than standing. Recycled asphalt millings work well for a yard that just needs a firm surface.

Road construction & private roads

Farm lanes, field roads and drives shared by several families are common here. Crown the surface, compact the rock under it, carry water off to a ditch, and a lane lasts years longer. Chip seal fits a long lane with light traffic. Hot mix fits one with regular truck use.

General asphalt paving & repair

Out around Frankclay, general asphalt work often means shop pads, machine-shed aprons, turnarounds for trucks and trailers, and the stretch of lane where gravel keeps washing out. We build those with drainage and heavy tires in mind.

What's under a Frankclay driveway

This is Old Lead Belt country, where the Farmington Plain gives way to dissected hills with red cherty clay over limestone. The soil survey flags low strength under vehicle traffic on several of these soils, correctable with suitable base material. Freeze-thaw winters punish anything that holds water. We grade for runoff and build the base to carry.

Bids are only comparable when they spell out the same things: base depth, compacted thickness, how edges are finished, and where water is meant to go. Ask for those before you pick a number.

Compacted asphaltTypically 2 to 3 in. for a car drive
Stone baseTypically 4 to 8 in., compacted
Drive on itUsually 2 to 3 days, longer in heat
First sealcoatTypically 6 to 12 months after paving

Typical ranges. Your Frankclay estimate is sized to the soil, the traffic and the drainage on your property.

Frankclay paving questions

Is there a permit or a city to deal with out here?

This is an unincorporated community, so there is no city hall to clear. County rules can still apply, especially for a new entrance onto a county road. We tell you what your site needs when we come out for the free estimate.

Can asphalt go over an existing gravel lane?

Often, but not without work. Existing gravel is usually too thin or too loose to serve as a base on its own. We check the depth, remove soft material, add and compact rock where it is short, then pave. That step is what makes the surface last.

What goes into the price of paving in Frankclay?

On a Frankclay job the price comes down to size, how much base work is needed, the asphalt thickness, whether old pavement has to come out, drainage fixes and how easily trucks can reach the work. Your written estimate lists each of those so you can compare it with other bids line by line.

Is gravel over the mud enough to build on?

Not usually. If the subgrade under a Frankclay lane is soft, stone alone just sinks into it. The fix is digging out the soft spots and rebuilding in compacted layers so the base has something to sit on.
