A sea captain and a group of sailors settled here in 1834 and named the place for prairie grass that reminded them of the sea. The village was incorporated in 1867 and reincorporated in 1888, and farmland still surrounds it. Route 143 runs through the middle as Division Street, and I-70 is about two miles off at Exit 24.
