Illinois's first state capital ended up on the west bank when the Mississippi cut a new channel in the flood of 1881, and it has been an island ever since. Ground here is river bottom farmland behind a levee, which is the single biggest factor in how a driveway or a parking area has to be built. Fine, wet soil under a thin surface will not hold.
So we build from the bottom: soft material out, rock in and compacted in layers, and a grade with a real outlet for water. Then hot mix, rolled dense. On island ground a driveway carries farm traffic as often as a car, so we size the base to the trucks. Soft material comes out, rock is compacted in layers, and hot mix goes down at a typical 2 to 3 inches compacted where cars and pickups are the load, thicker where equipment turns. The grade is set to keep standing water off the surface entirely.

Those surfaces take loaded trucks and tractor tires, not sedans, so base depth carries the job. We grade to an outlet, build turning areas heavier and keep edges supported where tires run off the pavement.
